Winter solstice. The beginning of winter and the shortest "day" of the year.
Fred took this picture at first light - and the clouds reminded him of the description in The Odyssey of the "rosy-fingered dawn". She is, according to Homer, a goddess who lights up what is possible in terms of space - the expanse of the sea - as well as in terms of time - the coming day with its opportunities and challenges. Her rosy fingers are inviting, not threatening. She serves as the mediator between the gods on high Olympus and mortal men. So perhaps this goddess can be a guide as we contemplate our New Year's resolutions.
We have four award-winning sparkling wines from dry to sweet. Many years ago, we lived in Sydney, Australia and we adopted the Aussie tradition of serving sparkling wine (perhaps with a little passionfruit) as the welcoming beverage to guests the moment they came in the door. And not just on New Year's Eve, but any time.
