AT THE ESTATE
Here's a photograph of Fred Johnson Sr., who founded Johnson Estate Winery sixty years ago in 1961. So, as we all celebrate Father's Day, we'll also be remembering the 60th anniversary of the winery. We were recently able to share some of Fred Sr.'s stories with the Class of 1946, his graduation year, during a Cornell Reunion Virtual Tasting for this class celebrating 75 years!
Fred Jr. reports that the farm team has completed the planting of new vines for three acres of Chardonnay, one-acre of Pinot Noir, and one acre of Riesling. And the recent spell of sunny weather means that the pollination of the grapes is just about complete.
Happy Summer!
Fred and Jennifer Johnson
FOUNDERS' RED
Naturally, Father's Day reminds of us of our popular Founders' Red, made from the Founder's favorite grape, Chancellor, grown on the grandfather's favorite hill on the Estate. This fruit-forward, but still dry red is made from 90% Chancellor and 10% Pinot Noir grapes - and makes a wonderful versatile red table wine.
SUMMER SOLSTICE
Today marks the first day of summer and the Summer Solstice - and given the gorgeous days we've been having, it's the perfect time to break out a bottle of chilled Solstice Sangria. Notes of citrus, berries, and tropical passion fruit flavors together create an easy-to-drink and refreshing summer wine.
